By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

HELL ON WHEELS (AMC) - Joe and Tony Gayton's drama script, about the construction of the transcontinental railroad during the 1860s, has reportedly been greenlit to pilot. Endemol USA is behind the hour, with the company's David Goldberg and Jeremy Gold executive producing alongside the Gaytons.

HEROES (NBC) - Creator Tim Kring has released a statement to the press concerning the show's cancellation after four seasons. It reads as follows: "I want to first extend my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the legion of enthusiastic fans who have watched 'Heroes' on TV, online, DVR, DVD and mobile over the last four seasons. Every week more than 45 million TV viewers around the world, as well as millions of social and digital media-based fans, have made 'Heroes' one of the five most-watched shows across traditional and digital media screens in the history of television. For NBC, I certainly understand the challenge of creating a business model around a show which arrived precisely as the audience was finding new ways to watch traditional content on multiple screens. I personally have had 12 great years with my friends at NBC, and with 'Heroes,' they provided me a rare opportunity to put a message of hope, interconnectivity and global consciousness into the world. For that I am grateful and look forward to finalizing our discussion about a number of ways to keep the 'Heroes' universe alive for its fans."

SOUTHLAND (TNT) - Regina King and Michael Cudlitz have closed their deals to return for the show's third season, the first produced solely for the cable channel. Co-stars Ben McKenzie and Shawn Hatosy are in talks to follow suit while Arija Bareikis, Kevin Alejandro, Tom Everett Scott and Michael McGrady are likewise expected to return, albeit as guest stars. Less clear is the fate of Clifton Collins Jr., who was credited as a series regular on one of the show's six episodes this season. Said changes are the result of the show's budget being trimmed "by more than a third" to accommodate its transition to cable.
