WEEK No. 33:

During the week of May 4, 2009, ABC took second place to Fox in Adults 18-34 (2.1/7) for the 4th straight week. Topping NBC for the week by 2.3 million viewers (8.7 million vs. 6.4 million) and by 30% among Adults 18-49 (2.6/8 vs. 2.0/6), ABC finished in a near tie for second place on both counts with Fox and CBS, respectively. The Network ranked No. 1 on 3 nights of the week in Adults 18-49, winning Monday, Thursday (3rd straight week) and Sunday (4th straight week).

Growing its Total Viewer (8.7 million) and Adult 18-49 (2.6/8) audiences for the 3rd consecutive week, ABC marked its strongest performance in 6 weeks on both measures since w/o 3/23/09. In fact heading into the final complete week of the 2008-09 TV Season, ABC was the only net to increase its overall audience week to week.

Rankings: ABC claimed 4 of the Top 10 TV shows for the week in Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 scripted series with "Grey's Anatomy": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 3 (No. 1 scripted), "Dancing with the Stars" No. 5, "Desperate Housewives" No. 7 and "Lost" No. 9. The Net broadcast 4 of the Top 15 most-watched television programs overall: "DWTS" No. 3, "Grey's" No. 6, "DWTS Results" No. 8 and "Housewives" No. 13.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 31% currently, from 24% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Monday

ABC stood as Monday's No. 1 network in both Total Viewers (17.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.2/11), leading the night in viewers for the 10th week running. Turning in its best numbers on the night on both counts in 7 weeks (since 3/16/09), ABC topped the second-place networks by 5.1 million viewers (11.9 million - CBS) and by 5% in Adults 18-49 (4.0/11 CBS and NBC tied).

In the key young adult demo, ABC beat CBS and Fox (4.0/10 tied) by 20% and NBC (1.6/4) by 200%. "Betty" finished No. 1 in the slot with Women 18-34 (2.9/10) for its 3rd straight telecast.
