By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

4400, THE (The CW) - The netlet's reboot of the 2004-07 series has been ordered directly to series. In the project, "4400 overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they've been returned with a few upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back now for a specific reason." Ariana Jackson is spearheading said take, taking over from Taylor Elmore and Craig Sweeny, whom originally sold it in November 2018. Anna Fricke and Laura Terry are also on board to executive produce for CBS Studios. (Variety.com)
DYNASTY (The CW) - Luke Cook will recur on the upcoming fourth season as Oliver, "Kirby's (Maddison Brown) ex-beau from Australia, a photographer who has come to town for a shoot, but has ulterior motives. They reconnect but his late-night partying and drug habit quickly take Kirby down a dangerous road." (Deadline.com)
EQUALIZER, THE (CBS) - Filming on the series has been paused for a few days after "a positive COVID-19 test result was produced yesterday as part of the show's rigorous safety protocols." (Deadline.com)
MARE OF EASTTOWN (HBO) - Guy Pearce has been confirmed as cast in the Kate Winslet-led limited series as Richard Ryan, "a visiting creative writing professor who wrote a dazzling novel that won the National Book Award 25 years ago, but he has never lived up to his early promise." He replaces Ben Miles, "who had been originally cast in the role but left due to scheduling conflicts more than a year ago." (Deadline.com)
NAOMI (The CW) - Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship's DC Comics adaptation is the latest heading to pilot at the netlet. The project "follows a teen girl's journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes." Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes of ARRAY Filmworks will also executive produce for Warner Bros. Television. (Variety.com)
OONA OUT OF ORDER (Amazon, New!) - Alice Bell is developing a series adaptation of Margarita Montimore's bestselling novel, which "revolves round Oona Lockhart, who at the strike of midnight on her nineteenth birthday wakes to find she is the surprise new inhabitant of her 55-year-old body. Where did her life disappear to? Stunned and terrified, Oona grapples with what feels like a catastrophic universal mistake until her following birthday when it happens again - then again and again, without explanation. As Oona leaps from year to year, living her life out of order, she strives to find her way back to her youth and her first boyfriend." PKM Productions' Patrick Moran and Writ Large's Greg Shephard and Noah Rosen will also executive produce for Amazon Studios and Spyglass Media Group. (Deadline.com)
POWERPUFF GIRLS, THE (The CW) - The live-action take on Craig McCracken's animated series - which "sees the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting" - has been ordered to pilot by the network. Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody are behind the project, with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden also executive producing for Vita Vera Films, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television. (Variety.com)
REBEL (ABC) - Mary McDonnell, Adam Arkin, Matthew Glave and Jalen Thomas Brooks will recur on the Katey Sagal-led newcomer. McDonnell will play Helen, who "doesn't let her own illness define her as she and her daughter fight for their lives and for justice"; with Arkin as Mark Duncan, who "markets himself as an altruist and a philanthropist and strongly rejects Rebel's assertion that his heart valve is doing harm"; Glave as Woodrow Flynn, "a beat cop who sometimes helps Rebel in her work; he was Rebel's first husband and is Nate's father"; and Brooks as Sean, "a sexy bad boy who is a member of Ziggie's Narcotics Anonymous group, Sean is pretty obviously into her - even though they both know it's a bad idea to date in the first year of recovery." (Deadline.com)
UNTITLED ROTHROCK & WEIR PROJECT (The CW, New!) - Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir have scored a pilot order from the netlet for a new drama about "two millennial nuns - a devout true believer, and a new arrival who has yet to take her final vows - who start as strangers and become sisters on a funny, spiritual journey to understand their own faith and place in the Catholic church." Jennie Snyder Urman and Joanna Klein of Sutton St. Productions will likewise executive produce for CBS Studios. The project is based on the duo's script "Cloister F*cked," which was selected for the Sundance Institute's 2019 Episodic Lab. (Variety.com)
