NEW YORK -- August 19, 2004 -- Jane Pauley reveals her battle with bipolar disorder, often referred to as manic depression, and hidden family secrets in a wide-ranging "Dateline NBC" interview with anchor Stone Phillips, to be broadcast Wednesday, Sept. 1 (9:00 PM, ET; 10 PM, PT). The former NBC News anchor will also appear on "Today," Monday, Aug. 30 (7:00 AM, ET).
In the candid and surprising interview, Pauley shares with Phillips personal truths about her public and private life - soon to be revealed in her upcoming book, Skywriting: A Life Out of the Blue - discussing for the first time publicly her father's battle with alcoholism and her own physical struggle with hives, how it contributed to her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and the emotional toll it took on her family - saying, "there was an alien presence in our familyand it was me."
Pauley tells Phillips about her extreme mood swings, alternately feeling "revved up" and emotionally drained and how when her behavior became noticeably out of character her doctor told her husband, Garry Trudeau, "your wife is very sick." When Phillips asks her about his reaction, she confides, "I think he might have been relieved because he and he alone had, had seen that something was wrong and had been helpless to do anything about it. I think he wanted his wife backbuthe was in for a turbulent few months."
Pauley describes her mood swings as "rapid cycling." She explains, "think of the mood swings that, you know, you have a bad mood and then tomorrow you feel betterMood swings are normalbut when the mood swings are destabilized, they just become more pronounced. The highs are higher and the lows are equivalently lower."
