The Game: Southern University will open its 2004 season against the Cornhuskers. The Golden Eagles, long known as one of the toughest defensive teams in the country, has tried everything to get its offense moving. The Eagles lack a good running game, but a good defense last year was able to keep attacks in check. The team captured the Conference USA last season and is expected to challenge again. QB DUSTIN ALMOND and RB ANTHONY HARRIS are the key players on offense. LB MICHAEL BOLEY will spearhead the defense. Nebraska is coming off a 56-17 win over Western Illinois in its season opener. In last week's victory, the Huskies experienced moments of greatness and moments that showed its offense still needs more work. QB JOE DAILEY ran for two touchdowns and threw for four, as Nebraska overcame six turnovers on the way to an easy victory. Dailey was named player of the game after he completed 15 of 30 passes for 218 yards and four touchdowns. The Cornhuskers' standout receiver caught seven passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while RB CORY ROSS rushed for 126 yards on 13 carries.

THE GAME: UCLA was defeated 31-20 by Oklahoma State last week. Despite the loss, the UCLA offense showed balance with RB MANUEL WRIGHT and QB DREW OLSON, each looking good in the season opener. Wright rushed for 145 yards on 20 carriers and two touchdowns. Olson completed 16 of 36 passes for 251 yards. Illinois is coming off a 52-13 win over Florida A&M. The Fighting Illini had little trouble with the Rattlers, jumping out to a 52-0 lead before A&Mfinally got on the board. Illinois' QB JON BEUTJER , who completed 16 of 18 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown, will lead the offense. Illinois' running tandem of E.B. HALSEY and PIERRE THOMAS is tremendous and should be a force against the Bruins.

The Herds failed on a two-point conversion attempt after a third quarter 10-yard Josh Davis touchdown catch, and were never able to get any closer. Despite the loss, Marshall's kicker, IAN O'CONNOR, managed to score three field goals. Marshall will look to QB STAN HILL, who completed 14 of 28 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown, to get its offense back on track. Fiesta Bowl winner and 9th-ranked Ohio State beat Cincinnati 27-6 last week. The Buckeyes rolled up 462 yards of total offense but didn't pull away until late in the third quarter. While Buckeye starting QB JUSTIN ZWICK struggled most of the day, the defense was solid. THE GAME: North Carolina, 1-0 on the season, is coming off a 49-38 win over William and Mary. The Tar Heels had to overcome a 31-21 deficit to pull out the victory. North Carolina's RB RONNIE MCGILLS, who ran for 133 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns, will once against lead the Tar Heels' offense. The Virginia Cavaliers, 1-0 on the season following a 44-14 pounding of Temple last week, will rely on the play of QB MARQUES HAGANS and RB WALI LUNDY. In a game dominated by Virginia from start to finish, Hagans completed 17 of 22 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown, while Lundy ran 24 times for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
