"20/20" LOOKS AT SEXUAL MISCONDUCT AMONG SPORT CLUB COACHES AND THEIR STUDENTS IN A CHRIS CONNELLY REPORT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 ON ABC

Parents want coaches in school and in sports clubs to be positive role models - teaching responsibility, hard work and sportsmanship. And that's mostly what happens. But experts tell ABC News that more and more coach sexual misconduct cases are being reported to authorities. "20/20" profiles several young women who were abused as children or adolescents by their coaches in basketball, soccer, Taekwondo and gymnastics. They tell how coaches targeted them, groomed them and then tried to coerce them not to tell. Almost all the coaches had multiple victims. ABC News Contributing Correspondent Chris Connelly's report airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

"I think many people feel that adults who abuse children are wearing trench coats and hiding in playgrounds. But the reality is the reason these people can molest children is because they're almost above suspicion," says Dr. Robert Shoop, who has been chronicling the problem since the 1980s. A Seattle Times investigation found that, over the last decade in the state of Washington alone, 159 coaches had been fired or reprimanded for sexual misconduct.

Abby, a former soccer star standout, says she had unprotected sex with her soccer coach when she was 16. "He could have asked me to do anything and I probably would have done it." Mary Katherine, a former gymnast, says the abuse at the hands of her gymnastics coach when she was younger has had a long-lasting effect. "I'm 22 years old and I still never had a first boyfriend, a first real kiss."
