'WEIGHING THE RISKS' WITH NBC'S AL ROKER - FRIDAY ON 'DATELINE NBC'
NEW YORK -- November 4, 2004 -- In an hour-long special, "Weighing the Risks," NBC's Al Roker reports on his health since his documented gastric bypass surgery, and the potential dangers and benefits involved in the procedure for obese people of all ages ? from teens to adults ? to be broadcast on "Dateline NBC," Friday, Nov. 5 (8-10 PM, ET).
Two and a half years ago, NBC's Al Roker made an important and life-altering decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery. Knowing that his dramatic weight loss and progress is being watched by millions, Roker sets the record straight in "Weighing the Risks" on his life after gastric bypass, saying, "For anybody who thinks that this is a magic bullet ? you do this and it's done. You're making a mistake. It's not."
In the four-part report, "Dateline NBC" examines potential risks for adults and teens from the controversial weight loss surgery. Roker tells the story of Mike Butler, a viewer who had reached out to him via email before his surgery, and who later died from complications. He also follows the stories of two obese teenagers who are hoping that gastric bypass will change their lives. Roker talks to teens, parents and a medical doctor about some potential dangers that come with the procedure and whether teens have a tougher time dealing with the emotional and physical changes that come with the surgery ? all in an attempt to answer the fundamental question, will these young people come to regret their decision or will their lives be improved?
David Corvo is the executive producer of "Dateline NBC."
