A NIGHT OF HEAVY DRINKING AND SEX INVOLVING TEENAGERS IN ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF., BUT WAS IT RAPE? -- "48 HOURS MYSTERY: 'EYE OF THE BEHOLDER'" SATURDAY, NOV. 20

It happened in the summer of 2002 during a wild July 4th weekend of partying in the wealthy community of Newport Beach, Calif. When it was over, three teenage boys would be accused of rape and face the prospect of spending life in prison. The critical evidence was a videotape the defendants made themselves. Correspondent Bill Lagattuta has the first network television interviews with the three defendants -- Greg Haidl, Keith Spann and Kyle Nachreiner -- and the alleged victim, "Jane Doe," to be broadcast on 48 HOURS MYSTERY: "Eye of the Beholder," Saturday, Nov. 20 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Haidl, Spann and Nachreiner all admit to having sex with the 16-year-old girl on the night in question -- sex that took place on a pool table in the Haidl family's garage. The boys insist it was all consensual. Haidl tells Lagattuta, "There was no crime committed." And, when Lagattuta asks Haidl if Jane Doe ever told them "no," Haidl replies, "Not one time."

However, the alleged victim says she was unconscious and completely unaware of what was taking place. Jane Doe tells Lagattuta, "Never was there consent....They've ruined my life."

Other factors also make this an explosive case. Haidl's parents were home and in bed at the time of the alleged assault and Haidl's father was an assistant sheriff in Orange County, Calif., where they live. And, according to prosecutor Dan Hess, "The evidence in this case that will prove [the boys] guilty is the videotape." But as this case will show, the evidence is in the eye of the beholder.

Was there a crime? Will a jury find these three boys guilty of rape?
