In this haunting love story, Katie Wilkinson (Perkins) is a New York book editor who falls deeply in love with author Matt Harrison (Schaech). On the night Katie plans to take their relationship to a deeper level, Matt tells her that he is breaking up with her and leaves with no further explanation. Katie is devastated and, unbeknownst to Matt, pregnant with his child.

As Katie struggles to make sense of what has happened, she receives a package from Matt containing a diary written by his wife Suzanne (Applegate) to their young son Nicholas with a note explaining that, though it will not be easy to read, he hopes it will help Katie understand him better. As Katie reads, she begins to comprehend the painful journey that he recently experienced and how it influenced everything in his life and, in turn, in Katies life as well.
