"Tarzan," the Academy Award-winning animated film (Best Song, Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart"), is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic story of an orphaned baby boy raised by apes in the African jungle. "Tarzan" will air in HDTV format and 5.1-channel surround sound and video description as a presentation of "The Wonderful World of Disney," SATURDAY, JUNE 11 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (Rebroadcast. OAD: 4/29/01)

Tarzan knows nothing of his human relatives. His friends are Terk, a playful young gorilla, and Tantor, an easily frightened elephant, who don't mind that he's different from all of the other animals in the jungle. But Kerchak, the silverback who heads the gorilla family group, refuses to accept him as a son, which makes Tarzan resolve to be the best ape ever. Eventually, however, a trio of explorers discovers him. Professor Porter and his daughter, Jane, seek only to broaden their zoological knowledge, but their guide, Clayton, has more lucrative plans in mind.

Kerchak forbids Tarzan to introduce the humans to his gorilla family, but the threat of losing Jane just as their love begins to blossom entices him to disobey. Tarzan must decide whether to remain with his gorilla family or return with Jane and the others and live his life as a human.

The film's outstanding voice cast includes Glenn Close ("The Stepford Wives," TV's "The Lion in Winter"), Minnie Driver ("Beautiful," "Return to Me"), Rosie O'Donnell ("The Flintstones"), Tony Goldwyn ("The Last Samurai," "Bounce"), Nigel Hawthorne ("The Winslow Boy"), Wayne Knight ("Master Spy: The Robert Hanssen Story") and Lance Henriksen ("Scream 3").

The film is a production of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., and Walt Disney Productions. (CLOSED-CAPTIONED)
