A TRILOGY OF TEENAGE TROUBLES AND TRIUMPHS, ON ABC NEWS' "20/20," FRIDAY, JULY 8
"20/20" reports on three compelling stories of teenagers who have already lived extraordinary lives, including a 14-year-old rape victim who spoke out in public about being attacked and a teenager who refuses to let his disability take control of his life. Teens who triumph airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, JULY 8 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. The reports include:
Lyndsey Kadziauskas was fourteen when she sneaked out of her parents' house in southern Maine to attend a party with some older boys from her high school. She thought it would be her ticket to the "in crowd," but a night of heavy drinking instead became a nightmare. Deborah Roberts reports that Lyndsey eventually told authorities she had been raped by two of the boys, while they claimed the sexual contact was consensual. Ultimately, one boy entered a guilty plea and the other was convicted of sexual assault. Because many in the community refused to believe Lyndsey's claim, she became something of an outcast. So she went public with her story in a national magazine article, and now tells Roberts she hopes her horrific experience will serve as a lesson to other young girls. And: Whether on a basketball court, at a track meet or with his friends, people say Doug Forbis has a rare kind of charisma. Born with a condition known as sacral agenesis, he lost his legs in infancy. But as ABC News correspondent Bob Brown reports, that hasn't stopped this high school senior, who plans on attending the University of Illinois in the fall. "I used to always just think, okay, I don't have legs, big deal," says Doug, who says competitive athletics gave him focus. "What he doesn't have in a physical body he makes up for with his intelligence and the heart of a lion," says David Kiley, Doug's wheelchair basketball coach. (Originally aired in June 2004)
Plus: What if your grandmother were also your mother, or your sister were also your child? JuJu Chang reports on a family with extraordinary ties from adoption. (Originally aired in August 2004)
"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. David Sloan is executive producer.
