LEGENDARY PALESTINIAN TERRORIST, JIHAD JA'ARA, IMPLICATED IN THE MURDER OF AN AMERICAN, TELLS NBC NEWS' LISA MYERS HOW IT IS THAT HE'S A FREE MAN IN IRELAND ON "DATELINE NBC," SUNDAY, SEPT. 11
NEW YORK -- September 9, 2005 -- The recent bombings in London have served as a wake-up call for European security officials who are now scrambling to find and neutralize terrorists in their midst. However, right next door to Britain, a renowned Palestinian terrorist, Jihad Ja'ara, is not only walking the streets a free man but, foreign intelligence sources say, is continuing to plot attacks in the Middle East. NBC News' Lisa Myers travels to Ireland to interview Ja'ara, to air this Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7 PM/ET on "Dateline NBC."
Ja'ara, who for years has led a double life, was an officer in the Preventive Security Force, the Palestinian equivalent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In that role he was responsible for preventing terrorist attacks, yet he was committing acts of violence at the same time. By 2002, he'd become a top operative with the terrorist group, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which has killed hundreds of Israelis and at least 5 Americans.
In a candid and rare interview, Ja'ara tells Myers, that despite being implicated in the murder of an American, he has "100 percent" freedom in Ireland, walking the streets of Dublin a free man. Irish officials declined to be interviewed but tell NBC News their intelligence service has intensified their surveillance of Ja'ara, who denies any involvement in the killing of an American.
