A FISHERMAN WHO WAS FORCED TO SACRIFICE HIS RIGHT ARM TO SAVE
HIS LIFE IN A BOATING ACCIDENT RECEIVES A BRAND NEW HOME,
THANKS TO ABCS EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION
Weird Al Yankovic Makes an Appearance
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition designers and contractors came to the home of Doug Goodale, a veteran lobster fisherman and his family from Wells Harbor, Maine, with the remarkable news that, in just seven days, they will be able to move back into a finished and completely renovated house, in an episode airing on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.
Near the end of the lobstering season a few years ago, Doug Goodale made a decision that would change the lives of his family forever. Looking out at the stormy, choppy waters of Wells Harbor that day, he tried to decide whether to go out to sea or not. If he didnt go, he wouldnt make any money. Needing to provide for his family, he pushed his boat out into the water at dead low tide.
When he reached his first trap and started pulling up his catch, a huge wave hit the boat, creating a slack in the rope which then spooled around the drum. A veteran fisherman, Doug knew to turn off the drums motor and untangle the rope, but as he reached in to turn it off, the sleeve of his oilskin got caught in the winch. Within seconds the winch had taken hold of his hand and his arm, breaking every bone as it consumed him. The only way for Doug to free himself from the deadly grip was to cut off his own arm. Thinking about his wife, Rebecca, and his two daughters, Amanda and Tabitha, and about needing to survive for them, Doug grabbed the twine knife he kept near the hauler and began to saw off his right arm.
But Doug didnt let the loss of his dominant arm stop him from picking up the pieces of his life. Though extremely difficult, he somehow taught himself to fish with only one arm and even rebuilt his boat. Unfortunately, due to the diminished wages of a lobster fisherman now operating with one arm, plus lost wages and massive medical bills, Doug is unable to repair his family home. The furnace, windows and chimney are literally falling apart, making it difficult to heat the house -- a significant problem, considering they live in one of the coldest climates in the country. Plus, funnyman Weird Al Yankovic checks in with the family.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will arrive just in time to give the Goodale family a safe haven from the upcoming storms, as they help this fisherman get his biggest catch of all a brand new home for his family. While the design team, national builder Katahdin Log Homes, contractors and hundreds of workers and volunteers are transforming the Goodales house into a dream home that will hopefully ease their burden and comfort them in their difficult journey, the Goodale family will go on vacation to Walt Disney World.
The design team for this episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will feature team leader Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo, Tanya McQueen, Paige Hemmis, Tracy Hutson and Eduardo Xol. The series is produced by Endemol USA, a division of Endemol Holding. Its executive-produced by Tom Forman and co-executive produced by Denise Cramsey. Broadcast with Spanish subtitles via secondary closed captioning, this program carries a TV-PG parental guideline.
