TWO FLORIDA MURDERS EXPOSE A KILLER'S SECRET PAST --
"48 HOURS MYSTERY," TUESDAY, MAY 30
Thirty-year History of Violence Unmasked
Carl "Charlie" Brandt was a mild-mannered man who lived what seemed to be a normal life in Big Pine Key, Fla. He was devoted to his wife of 17 years, Teri, and close to her family. So, when Hurricane Ivan threatened the Florida Keys in September 2004, the Brandts headed to the Orlando home of Teri's niece, Michelle Jones, a successful television executive at the Golf Channel. But, a few days after the Brandt's arrival, police made a horrific discovery at Michelle's home: Teri, stabbed repeatedly, was dead; Michelle was also dead and brutally dismembered; and Charlie had hanged himself in the garage. Correspondent Susan Spencer reports on the strange and twisted life of Charlie Brandt for 48 HOURS MYSTERY: "Deadly Obsession" to be broadcast Tuesday, May 30 (10:00 11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The crime scene told a story that both horrified and bewildered friends and family. Investigators concluded that Charlie Brandt was the murderer and that he was obsessed with Michelle. Even more disturbing was the meticulous way Brandt murdered Michelle.
Though lead investigator Rob Hemmert was certain that Brandt was the killer, he was determined to find out why Brandt had killed. Hemmert's first clue came when Brandt's older sister, Angela, revealed a shocking family secret: in 1971, when Brandt was 13 years old, he had shot both his father and mother at their home in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Brandt's mother, eight months pregnant, died of her injuries. Because Brandt was then a juvenile, state authorities never charged him with murder and never brought him to trial. Instead, Brandt was sent to a mental institution for little more than a year and then released to his family. Apparently, Brandt's father never spoke to him about killing his mother.
Did Teri know about her husband's deadly past? Teri's family says she didn't, but a friend of Brandt's claims she did. Why did Brandt murder his wife and what obsession led him to murder Michelle? Was he, in fact, a serial killer and responsible for other deaths?
As detectives poured over cases that fit Brandt's profile, they also discovered Brandt had many medical and anatomy books and that he frequented many websites featuring death fantasies, necrophilia and violence against women.
48 HOURS MYSTERY explores the riddle of Charlie Brandt and follows investigators as they uncover the other deadly secrets Brandt kept in the more than three decades since he killed his mother.
