VANISHED AN INTENSE MANHUNT FOR AN AMERICAN WOMAN
WHO DISAPPEARED IN IRELAND OVER A DECADE AGO
LEADS INVESTIGATORS TO A POSSIBLE SERIAL KILLER,
ON ABC NEWS 20/20, FRIDAY, JUNE 9
20/20 reopens the files on a haunting international mystery that unfolds in Ireland, but begins with a young woman from America. It is a cold case that recently became hot again as investigators now close in on the answers to the disappearance of a number of young women around Dublin over a decade including 26-year-old American Annie McCarrick. McCarrick, the daughter of a retired New York State Parks policeman, traveled to Ireland from the U.S. to pursue her love of Irish literature and culture. She never returned. 20/20 co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas reports on this young womans disappearance -- which became the focus of one of the largest manhunts in Irish history -- on the belief of some that she may be linked to the work of a serial murderer, and on the suburban American family caught in a nightmare in a place far from home. 20/20 airs FRIDAY, JUNE 9 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
The report returns to Ireland to update and expand an hour which originally aired on ABC News Vanished in April 2000.
After months of fear and frustration with Irish authorities, the McCarrick family hired their own private detective and brought in a specialist from Londons Scotland Yard. As the still unsuccessful hunt for Annie continued, more young women began to disappear. Recent reports in the Irish press examine possible links between these cases and a known rapist and murderer.
20/20 is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. David Sloan is the executive producer.
