"THE DREW CAREY SHOW" (6:30-7:00 p.m. ET)
"Volunteer" (CONTENT RATING TBD)
DREW'S JOB IS THREATENED In order to improve the store's reputation, Mr. Wick (Craig Ferguson) orders his employees to volunteer on Saturdays at a decrepit nursing home full of cranky old people. When Drew (Drew Carey) is given the additional task of taking inventory at the store on Saturday night, he is glad to be away from the senior citizens. But the mischievous old folks, led by the impish Gus (Tim Conway, "The Carol Burnett Show"), want to get out of the nursing home for awhile. They convince Drew to take them with him to the store, where they set up situations and photograph them to make it look like Drew is forcing them to do his arduous work. The next night, well-known Cleveland, Ohio, news broadcaster Ted Henry (as himself) presents the "scandalous" story of Drew's apparent heartlessness. Mrs. Louder (recurring guest star Nan Martin) threatens to terminate Drew's job unless he convinces Gus to admit that it is all a lie. However, at the nursing home, donations from sympathetic television viewers have purchased many extravagant luxuries. Drew fails to intimidate Gus and the other residents into telling the truth. Sam Simon directed the episode written by Terry Mulroy (#466260).
