HERO OR VIGILANTE? WILL A MAN LAND IN PRISON
FOR FATALLY SHOOTING HIS ALLEGED ABUSER?
Chris Cuomo Reports on "20/20," Friday, May 21 on ABC
Includes Exclusive Interview with Aaron Vargas, the Man Who Was
Applauded by Neighbors for Committing the Murder
Is it ever okay to take the law into your own hands? That question has divided a California community since the murder of a respected town businessman last February. Aaron Vargas, a young father about to be married, shot and killed Darrell McNeill - a former neighbor and the father of his childhood best friend - while McNeill's wife watched. But as the story unfolded, everyone in Fort Bragg, CA was stunned to learn of the alleged dark secrets kept for decades between the two men. Vargas told his family and the authorities that McNeill had sexually and psychologically abused him for years. Was killing McNeill revenge? Vigilante justice? For the first time since the shooting, Vargas sits down with Chris Cuomo in an exclusive interview about what happened that night and in the years leading up to his breaking point. Chris Cuomo's report airs on "20/20," FRIDAY, MAY 21 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Immediately after the arrest, 12 more men came forward claiming they, too, had been abused by McNeill, but never had the courage to tell. Many people in the town - and even McNeill's own family - rallied in Vargas' defense, asking that he be released and counseled instead of prosecuted.
"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and Chris Cuomo. David Sloan is executive producer.
