"20/20" HITS THE OPEN ROAD WITH "HIGHWAYS FROM HELL," FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 ON ABC

Before gassing up the car on an end-of-summer road trip, tune in to "20/20" for unbelievable tales from the road and potential life-saving tips. According to numbers just released from AAA travel, approximately 29.2 million people plan to drive to their destination this Labor Day weekend, an increase of 4.3% from last year. With reports on GPS navigation systems, surviving a highway pile-up and the nation's most dangerous Highways, "20/20" airs FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on ABC.

· GPS Astray: How much do you trust your GPS navigator to get you to your destination safely? It might be much less after hearing this tale of a mom, a daughter and an exchange student lost in Death Valley. In July 2010, Donna Cooper, her daughter, Gina, and their friend, Jenny Leung, took a wrong turn after a day at the park's museum. Turning to their GPS for navigation, things quickly went downhill - and off the beaten trail. With no cell phone signal or paper maps, the women had no idea they were driving into one of the most remote and unforgiving corners of the 3.5 million acre desert. Jay Schadler reports their harrowing ordeal. (OAD 3/15/13)

· Pileup: Matt and Catie Stegmoyer and their two children were driving along a Texas highway last Thanksgiving when they found themselves in the middle of a deadly 118 vehicle pileup. But the Stegmoyers were able to walk away unscathed largely because they ignored conventional wisdom about what to do in a traffic accident. John Quiones reports. (OAD: 4/26/13)

· Hit and Run: Inside the LAPD's Hit and Run Investigations Unit, cops use the latest forensic techniques and caught-in-the-act video to track down hit and run drivers in the country's deadliest city for pedestrians. Cecilia Vega reports.

· Truckers: Jim Avila report on the sights, the sounds and the smells of life on the road as one of America's long-haul truckers.

· Dead Man's Curve: John Quiones lets you know if you're driving on one of the nation's most notorious and dangerous highways every day.

· Drive Home Alive: Mudslides, downed wires, avalanches, flash floods, earthquakes ABC News Correspondent Gio Benitez with a how-to survival guide to best handle potentially deadly roadside scenarios.

"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is executive producer.
