MAKING NEW FILM WAS "INTENSE,"
SAYS STEVE CARELL - "60 MINUTES" SUNDAY
Actor Steve Carell tells Steve Kroft that he enjoyed making "Foxcatcher," but that it was "intense." The actor known for his comedic roles talks about his performance in the soon-to-be released psychodrama "Foxcatcher." Kroft profiles Carell on the next edition of 60 MINUTES, Sunday Nov. 9 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Carell says shooting "Foxcatcher" took three months and often went into the early hours of the morning. He plays convicted murderer John Du Pont, the heir to one of America's oldest fortunes, whose attempt to lead a group of elite Olympic wrestlers to gold ended in tragedy.
Carell is nearly unrecognizable in the film. He had to sit for three hours each day in makeup, and it had a profound effect on how he interacted with the other cast members. "I think [the makeup] just sort of lent to being in character... when I was around other people, I got the sense that they didn't feel like they were around Steve. They were around this other person," he tells Kroft.
The actor, who cracked up audiences in the "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" and "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," says playing Du Pont was like nothing he had ever done before, "I felt like I experienced something as opposed to going in and acting for a camera. It was a different thing."
Kroft's profile of Carell traces his career from his first big break with Chicago's Second City comedy troupe, through his hit TV series "The Office" and covers his box office successes. Kroft also talks with Carell's wife Nancy Walls about their life at home and what she thought of his performance in "Foxcatcher." Nancy tells Kroft, "I just... almost immediately forgot that I was watching my husband up there. That was amazing to me." Watch an excerpt.
