MEET THE PARENTS

Airing on "20/20" Friday, January 16 on ABC

Why on earth would two highly educated lawyers and parents plant drugs in the car of a fellow parent who is the president of the PTA and a school volunteer? Chris Connelly's report on the bizarre case out of Irvine, California includes revealing interviews with the victim, prosecutor, and police. "20/20" airs on FRIDAY, JANUARY 9 (10:00 - 11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Plus: Nick Watt reports on a family caught between new relaxed marijuana laws and older tighter child protection statutes. "20/20" follows all the twists and turns of a custody case involving parents whose five year old son is taken into state custody because of marijuana use even though it is legal in their state. Then, just as evidence emerges that validates the state's case, a judge makes a startling ruling.

And: They are a typical American family - a father, mother and two biological children, Kai, 3, and Pax, 17 months. But in one important respect, they are anything but typical -- the parents are both transgender. Bianca, 32, was born a boy called Jason and transitioned to live as a woman 11 years ago, while Nick, 27, was born a girl called Nicole and has lived as a man for the past seven years. They met and fell in love in 2009. They can't afford sex reassignment surgeries so will remain as they are for now. Nick bore the children, and delivered by C-section. Now they are raising their children, living in Louisville, and preparing to face the many questions from their kids and the world in the coming years. But they say they are ready for anything. Elizabeth Vargas has their story.

Also: Police allege that Diane Staudte woke up one morning in her Springfield, Missouri home and decided she had enough of being a wife and mom. With the help of her middle daughter and some well-mixed anti-freeze cocktails, police allege she successfully killed her husband, then her son, and very nearly another daughter - who lived to tell the tale to "20/20." Both she and her daughter are pleading not guilty. Deborah Roberts reports.

"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
