TERROR ON THE TRESTLE
"20/20" Airs Friday, March 20 on ABC
There may be no boss who commands more power than a movie director. But what happens when the safety of the crew is compromised for the sake of getting a great shot? Deep in the swampland of Georgia, a film crew gathers to shoot a dream sequence on an old train trestle. After waiting for two freight trains to roar past, the crew is told to setup a hospital bed and cameras on the bridge. But the dream sequence scene soon turns into a nightmare. A third train going 60 miles-an-hour is on them sending the crew scrambling for their lives. Tragically, 27-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones doesn't make it off the bridge. She is killed instantly and others are injured. Sarah's death shocks the film community and has everyone asking: why would they choose to set up on active tracks? Director Randall Miller pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter making it the first time a director in the history of filmmaking is sent to jail for the death of a crewmember. And Sarah Jones' parents take a journey up the Altamaha River to see, first hand, the trestle where their daughter tragically lost her life. "20/20" airs FRIDAY, MARCH 20 (10:01-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Plus: The investigation into millionaire murder suspect Robert Durst is growing wider. Cold case files across the nation are getting dusted off to see if Durst could have been involved in other unsolved murders. Durst, the son of a real estate mogul, is under suicide watch at a Louisiana prison after being arrested in New Orleans earlier this week on a warrant out of Los Angeles, where he was charged in the 2000 murder of his friend, Susan Berman. He was arrested the day before HBO aired the finale of "The Jinx," its documentary series about Durst. The series covers the 1982 disappearance of his first wife in New York, his acquittal for the dismemberment murder of a neighbor in Texas and Berman's slaying.
Elizabeth Vargas sits down with victim's families -- people who have written about Durst and a judge who have all watched him walk out of her courtroom even after he admitted killing a man.
"20/20" is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and David Muir. David Sloan is senior executive producer.
