"48 HOURS" GOES INSIDE THE CONTROVERSIAL WORLD OF INTERNATIONAL ADOPTIONS AND ALSO INVESTIGATES THE MURDER OF A MOTHER WITH A SECRET LIFE IN A SATURDAY NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE

Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015 at 9:00 PM, 10:00 PM

48 HOURS goes inside the sometimes-shady business of international child adoptions and the lengths families will go to bring children home to the United States and also investigates the murder of a mother with a secret life in a Saturday night double feature to be broadcast Saturday, Sept. 5 (9:00 PM, ET/PT, 10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

At 9:00 PM, Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS explore the controversial world of international child adoptions and travel with one family to adopt two children in an updated encore of "Perilous Journey." The investigation reveals the extraordinary journey the family goes through to get two children from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the questionable practices of the U.S.-based adoption agency they'd chosen. Maher also reports on the harrowing story of one woman's attempt to adopt a child from Guatemala through the same agency, and the allegations of child trafficking against Guatemalan nationals that emerged afterward.

Maher follows Ryan Owen and his wife, Jeri Lynn, as they travel to Kinshasa and discover just what a perilous journey overseas adoption can be. The Owens began working on the adoption through Celebrate Children International (CCI), a small Florida agency, run by Sue Hedberg. But the Owens' relationship with CCI began to deteriorate when their adoption process inexplicably stalled and they started hearing disturbing things about Hedberg's Congolese lawyer. The Owens took matters into their own hands, hiring their own attorney and travelling to the Congo to try to complete the adoption themselves.

The Owens are not alone in their struggle to adopt children from abroad or to raise questions about the process. Nor are they alone in their questions about Sue Hedberg, who sent 48 HOURS a written statement through a representative maintaining, "each and every adoption undertaken by CCI was, and is, in strict compliance with the laws of the United States and the laws and regulations of the originating nation at the time of the adoption."

The Owens were successful in completing an adoption. Six months after their trip with 48 HOURS, Ava and Zoey celebrated their first Christmas with the family. Jeri Lynn says the girls had a lot of loss to overcome and remember the Congo as a place of hurt. Here for two years now, Jeri Lynn says the girls are thriving.

At 10:00 PM, Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS continue an eight-year investigation into the disappearance and murder of Paige Birgfeld a Colorado mother of three who went missing in June 2007 in an updated edition of "The Secret Life of Paige Birgfeld."

Birgfeld vanished June 28, 2007, leaving behind her children and dark secrets her family would only learn after they pieced together her hidden life as a high-priced escort. When police discovered her secret life, they thought they had a clue to her disappearance. Her family, led by her father Frank Birgfeld, was sure something bad happened because Paige would never voluntarily leave her kids behind. The family and volunteers searched the surrounding hills and valleys and found nothing.

Police, however, also began tracing Birgfeld's cellphone records, which led them to her clients. One stuck out as a suspect, an ex-convict named Lester Ralph Jones, but there wasn't enough evidence to charge him. Everything changed in 2012 when a hiker found Birgfeld's body. But was that enough to make an arrest and go to trial? Moriarty and 48 HOURS report on the latest developments in the case, which may finally reveal the answers Birgfeld's family has been waiting years to hear.
