Mom Convicted of Poisoning Her Young Son with Salt Officially Declared Innocent
"Home Free" Airs on "20/20" Saturday, May 20 on ABC
Last week newly elected District Attorney Mark Gonzalez officially declared Hannah Overton innocent, after being convicted for the murder of her 4-year-old son Andrew and spending 7 years in jail - putting an end to a 10-year nightmare. Overton was convicted of intentionally feeding Andrew a mixture of chili seasoning and water and then neglecting to get him medical care when he grew ill. He died of hypernatremia (salt poisoning). She was in the process of adopting Andrew with her husband Larry.
Hannah maintained her innocence. Her husband continued to support her, and her church community rallied around her. Her defenders say Andrew had behavioral and eating problems that caused his acute and rare illness.
"20/20" and Juju Chang had exclusive access to the family throughout nine years of reporting, and only "20/20" cameras were rolling for the first moments she was released. Nueces County District Attorney Mark Skurka had charged Overton a second time for murder after her release, but four months later the new charges were dismissed.
