Monday, August 14 (10:00 PM, ET/PT)
Correspondent Vladimir Duthiers gains exclusive access to military bases in Guam, South Korea and Hawaii and looks at the U.S. military's plans for a conflict with North Korea, in the next edition of CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT to be broadcast Monday, August 14 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and on CBSN, the network's 24/7 streaming news service.
For his report, Duthiers embeds with the military as they train for what is being called "the nightmare scenario." He also talks with the men and women who would be tasked with fighting that battle, and goes airborne with fighter pilots defending U.S. interests. CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT will also go behind the scenes of Instagram's new mission to engineer "kindness," and will feature an investigation into how Iceland may be effectively eliminating Down syndrome.
CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT is a new primetime summer series featuring experiential reports driven by fresh voices and perspectives from around the world. Each hour-long edition of the series will feature multiple stories and highlight CBSN's distinctive storytelling style, as reported by more than a dozen CBS News correspondents.
CBS News contributor and Wired magazine editor Nick Thompson visits Instagram's Menlo Park headquarters for a rare interview with CEO Kevin Systrom on how the social media platform is investing in cutting-edge technology and social science to sift through tens of millions of comments to predict abusive content. But is it going too far to limit free speech in order to create a friendlier platform?
And from Iceland, Elaine Quijano investigates how the nation is slowly eliminating Down syndrome from its society. The country has a 100% abortion rate when prenatal tests come back positive for the condition. Quijano uncovers a larger trend across Europe and the medical and ethical implications. She also speaks with the parents of children with Down syndrome about what the country's policy means to them.
In addition to being presented on the CBS Television Network, CBSN: ON ASSIGNMENT will be streamed live on CBSN and to CBS All Access subscribers through the service's live streaming offering of local CBS stations. Additional content will be available on CBSNews.com and across CBS News' apps on all leading digital platforms.
Since launching in November 2014, CBSN has significantly grown viewership and expanded its original reporting with new series and documentaries that have resonated with audiences.
