A PSYCHIATRIST IS UNDER ARREST - DID SHE PROGRAM A MAN TO KILL HER EX-LOVER? "48 HOURS" INVESTIGATES IN "THE PSYCHIATRIST AND THE SELFIE"
Saturday, Dec. 2, 10:00 PM
Did a psychiatrist brainwash a man to kill her ex-lover? Jacob Nolan sits in prison for trying to bludgeon to death Dr. Michael Weiss, and maintains it was his cousin, psychiatrist Dr. Pamela Buchbinder, who convinced him to do it.
What really happened? Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigate and have the latest twist in a bizarre updated edition of "The Psychiatrist and The Selfie" to be broadcast Saturday, Dec. 2 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
It's a story of a troubled young man who ended up in the middle of a brutal breakup between two psychiatrists, and who claims he was manipulated by one of them into trying to kill the other. "I intended to kill him," Nolan told Van Sant, of the day he went to the Manhattan office of psychiatrist Dr. Michael Weiss.
On that day, Nov. 12, 2012, Nolan carried a duffle bag to Weiss' office. Inside the bag was a sledgehammer, a kitchen knife and zip ties. When Nolan attacked Dr. Weiss, Weiss fought back furiously. After the fight, Nolan, covered in blood, snapped a selfie.
According to Nolan he was "reporting back to Pamela. Like, 'what do I do next?'"
At the time of the attack, Nolan was living with his cousin, psychiatrist Dr. Pamela Buchbinder, who was treating him. Nolan had been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder, and his family took Buchbinder up on her offer to help. But during the time Nolan was with Buchbinder, she was also going through a brutal custody battle with Weiss. That hatred turned into a plan to kill Weiss, Nolan and his attorneys maintained. Nolan says she wanted him to hit Weiss over the head, even playing The Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" repeatedly as part of the alleged manipulation.
"I would have done anything for Pamela," Nolan told Van Sant. "It happens so slowly that you don't really recognize this growing feeling inside of you, that one day you wake up and say, 'I'll kill for this woman.'"
Last year, Nolan was convicted of attempting to murder Weiss.
Last month, nearly five years after the attack on Weiss, Buchbinder was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault. The Manhattan District Attorney accused Buchbinder of orchestrating the brutal attack.
Was Nolan brainwashed, or could he have backed out at any time?
