Carrie Underwood Returns to Idol as Superstar Guest Mentor and Performs Hit Single 'Cry Pretty'

"117 (Top 5)" - The stakes are high as the Top 5 finalists perform in hopes of winning America's vote and making it through to the finals, as the search for America's next superstar continues on its new home on America's network, The ABC Television Network, SUNDAY, MAY 13 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT, 5:00-7:01 p.m. PDT), streaming and on demand.

In this episode in honor of Mother's Day, the Top 5 finalists will sing songs dedicated to moms, in addition to performing from the catalogue of "American Idol" alum and seven time GRAMMY(R) winner Carrie Underwood. The Top 5 finalists were surprised with a trip to Nashville and the opportunity to learn from Underwood while she served as superstar guest mentor for the week. Underwood will also perform her hit single, "Cry Pretty," which she co-wrote and co-produced, from the Idol stage on Sunday.

For the first time in the history of American television, a reality-competition series is allowing viewers to watch and vote from coast to coast simultaneously, as "American Idol" is simulcast in all time zones across the country over a three-week span, which concludes Sunday, May 13 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT/5:00-7:01 p.m. PDT), on The ABC Television Network. Viewers are able to vote by text, via AmericanIdol.com/vote and on the "American Idol" app during the live broadcast. Results will be revealed at the end of each show in real time, across all time zones. During this three-week span, these episodes will also be rebroadcast during their normal time slot on Sundays at 8:00-10:01 p.m. PDT.

Helping America determine who will become the next singing sensation are music industry forces and superstar judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, with Emmy(R) Award-winning Ryan Seacrest returning as host.

"American Idol" is produced by FremantleMedia North America and CORE Media Group's 19 Entertainment. Following the historic revival of the beloved series on ABC, the fan favorite will set out once again on a nationwide search to discover the next singing sensation. Returning to help find the cream of the crop are music industry legends and all-star judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. Emmy(R)-winning producer Ryan Seacrest will also return to helm the music competition series as host. In its first season on ABC, "American Idol" has finished as Sunday's No. 1 entertainment broadcast series on each of its 8 telecasts this season in Live + Same Day Adults 18-49. In fact, on average, the series ranks No. 1 in its 2-hour slot with Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) and Teens 12-17. "American Idol" is more than doubling ABC's Sunday 8:00-10:00 p.m. time-period results year-to-year in Total Viewers (+158%) and Adults 18-49 (+110%), producing the Net's best results in the 2-hour slot in 4 years among viewers and in 3 years among young adults - since the comparable weeks of 2014 and 2015, respectively.
