WHISTLEBLOWERS TAKE ON A DOCTOR ACCUSED OF PRESCRIBING CHEMOTHERAPY TO PATIENTS WHO DON'T HAVE CANCER AND A FOR-PROFIT COSMETOLOGY SCHOOL CHEATING STUDENTS AND THE GOVERNMENT, ON "WHISTLEBLOWER," FRIDAY, JULY 20
"The Deadly Cancer Doctor & the Ugly Side of the Beauty Business"
What could be worse than being diagnosed and treated for cancer? Later finding out that your doctor lied and you never had it to begin with. An office manager at a cancer center blows the whistle on the oncologist running the practice when he discovers the doctor giving chemotherapy to more than 500 patients who do not need it. The scope of what the whistleblower discovered was staggering.
"I couldn't believe someone would do anything this terrible to another human being," says whistleblower George Karadsheh. "People were being disabled by treatments they never needed."
Karadsheh says he was scared about what he uncovered.
"I wasn't looking at the patients anymore as being treated and being helped," Karadsheh says. "I looked at it as a burning building with people inside.
Host Alex Ferrer investigates the whistleblower case against the oncologist and another on a $100 million beauty school scam in WHISTLEBLOWER, Friday, July 20 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Tess Mercer, a school director for the Marinello School of Beauty in California, takes action when she can no longer watch students - and the government - getting fleeced by a for-profit school that was rife with fraud and disguised as a legitimate cosmetology school.
"It was a total fraud and a total scam," Mercer says. "It was not about education at all."
"I've lost so many things... my husband, my house, my cars," says Meggan Ojeda, a mother of three. "I want them to take away my loans... I want them to give me back the money they took from me... I couldn't finish because of them... "
Mercer risks everything to expose the scam and fears for her life. She believes she's being followed and buys a handgun for protection.
"I was afraid of retaliation," Mercer says. "Who am I if I'm getting in their way of $100 million?"
