(from BBC America's web site) Tommy Murphy is an uncompromising, undercover cop who becomes a key confidante to the head of the largest criminal organization in London. In this new season, Tommy's character takes a dark turn. Gone is the cheeky Irish humor as he attempts to crack his most dangerous and complex case yet. Posing as an arms dealer, Murphy sets up a deal to sell guns for an assassination. When the potential buyer shows up, he realizes it's Caz Miller - a known associate of Dave Callard, the head of London's largest criminal organization. Not wanting to blow this connection, he changes the plot and offers himself as an assassin for hire, in the hopes that this will be his in to Callard's organization, and needless to say, the case of his career. However, once he enters the underbelly of London's gangland, he starts to question whether he is a better criminal than he is a cop.... Award-winning actor James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, Bloody Sunday) is an uncompromising undercover cop haunted by his past in Murphy's Law. Specially written for Nesbitt, the role of Tommy Murphy blends black humor and tragedy in a way that marks him out from other TV cops. While Murphy served as an officer in the Royal Ulster Constabulary, the IRA murdered his daughter in front of his wife. Haunted by grief and guilt, his marriage split up and he moved to London to start over. A failed psychiatric assessment nearly cost him his police career, but he was offered a lifeline in the form of a new job as an undercover detective - a perfect profession for a man with nothing left to lose. Complex and contradictory, Murphy uses the job to hide from the heartbreaking events of his past, yet is likely to offer up a witty one-liner at the scene of a bloody murder. Even undercover he retains a bullish sense of humor and opinionated personality. He refuses to blend in with the criminals he's out to arrest - even though he may risk blowing his cover. Acclaimed film writer and novelist Colin Bateman (Divorcing Jack, Wild About Harry, Jumpers) wrote and created Murphy's Law for James Nesbitt. Bateman's first Murphy's Law novel was published in 2002 and marked the beginning of a series about the maverick cop.
