In November 2004 Bill (Timothy Spall, Mr.Turner, Wicked Little Lies), and Wendy Ainscow (Brenda Blethyn, Vera, Pride & Prejudice) took an overdose of sleeping pills and waded into the warm Atlantic Ocean off Tenerife to commit suicide. Wendy survived but tragically Bill died. The couple's bizarre suicide pact was the culmination of years of trying but failing to get an accurate diagnosis for their adult daughter Lisa (Rebekah Staton, Raise by Wolves, The Midwich Cuckoos: Village of the Damned), who returned home after being de-sectioned under the mental health act.
