Out of the blue, Gaby's life is turned upside down when an arrogant hot-air balloon pilot crash-lands on top of her coop full of heritage chickens, and sets up home next door to her. The collision exposes a festering family conflict and forces Gaby to confront the haughty balloonist as well as her own problematic past. Previously, Gaby's life had consisted of caring for her energetic seven-year-old son, her ailing mother, and a suicidal rooster, while struggling to keep her cleaning job at a local hotel. Over the summer, Gaby slowly opens up to her new neighbor, thanks to the growing bond between him and her son. But when the balloonist gets too close to her, she clams up again, much to her son's chagrin. Will she be able to make amends and give herself and her young son a better future?
