Stand-Up Comedian Carlos Mencia Comes To Comedy Central With A Ten Episode Series Premiering Summer 2005
NEW YORK, February 7, 2005 -- Critically-acclaimed comedian Carlos Mencia brings his merciless brand of humor to COMEDY CENTRAL with a ten episode series commitment, it was announced today by Lauren Corrao, senior vice president original programming and head of development, COMEDY CENTRAL. Mencia will star in the yet-to-be-titled, half-hour series which will be executive produced by Mencia and Emmy Award-winning producer Robert Morton (Late Show with David Letterman).
"Carlos Mencia is one of the most popular touring comedians in the country today with a huge, dedicated following and we're thrilled to bring him to COMEDY CENTRAL," said Corrao. "His honest style and no nonsense point of view will allow him to explore a variety of subjects while his broad appeal has the potential to attract new and more diverse viewers to COMEDY CENTRAL."
"It's a pleasure to be doing a show for COMEDY CENTRAL," said Mencia. "Traditional networks would cast me as the head of a household with 16 children, which I find extremely offensive because there are 18 kids in my family."
Shot in studio and on location, Mencia's new series will be based on his unique point of view on the world as he comments on current events, does man-in-the-street films, commercial parodies and interacts with the audience. The series is tentatively scheduled to premiere in summer 2005.
Described as an "observational comedian," Mencia's ability to connect with a diverse audience by pointing out society's hypocrisy has made him one of the most successful touring comedians in the country. Mencia's critically-lauded debut album, "Take A Joke America," was released in 2000, while his latest CD, "America Rules," was recorded live and features an hour of material that deals with the events of September 11.
Mencia's film credits include "Three Amigos Live In Concert" and the independent films, "Outta Time" and "29 Palms." His television credits include guest starring roles on "The Shield" and "Bernie Mac," as well as two solo HBO specials and appearances on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," "HBO's Loco Slam" and "Comic Relief VI." Already well-known with COMEDY CENTRAL viewers, Mencia's half-hour special, as part of the COMEDY CENTRAL Presents franchise, consistently performs well and his video clips are among the most requested stand-up clips on comedycentral.com.
Executive producer Robert Morton's credits include "Late Show with David Letterman," "The Chris Rock Show," "John Leguizamos FREAK" and "Drew Carey's Green Screen Show." Gary S. Mann will serve as executive in charge of production for COMEDY CENTRAL. Prior to receiving a series commitment, Mencia performed two "pilot presentations" at the COMEDY CENTRAL Stage, located in Hollywood, which serves as a developmental laboratory for the network.
COMEDY CENTRAL, the only all-comedy network, currently is seen in more than 86 million homes nationwide. COMEDY CENTRAL is owned by Comedy Partners, a wholly-owned division of MTV Networks.
