Season Premieres of Network's "The L Word(R)" and "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" Also Available for Streaming at Netflix
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 4 -- Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world's largest online movie rental service, today announced that starting January 8, the new Showtime Networks original series "United States of Tara," starring Academy Award(R) nominee Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine") and John Corbett ("Sex and the City"), can be watched instantly at Netflix two weeks in advance of the series' SHOWTIME premiere on Sunday, January 18 (10:00 p.m. PST/EST). In addition, season premieres of the highly-acclaimed SHOWTIME original series "The L Word(R)" and "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" will be available to Netflix subscribers on January 18, day and date with their network debuts.
Building on its 2007 partnership with SHOWTIME for advance viewing of the edgy comedy series "Californication," Netflix is offering subscribers the chance to instantly watch current season programs ahead of their telecast premieres. The new shows, which will be available throughout the month of January, can be streamed on PCs, Intel-based Macs and TVs connected to any of a number of Netflix ready devices.
"We're very happy to be working with Netflix to offer their customers a chance to sample 'United States of Tara' before its January 18 SHOWTIME premiere," said Robert Hayes, senior vice president and general manager of Showtime Networks Digital Group. "They were a great partner in the past and we look forward to their help in launching this exciting new show for SHOWTIME."
"Netflix is excited to again partner with SHOWTIME to offer our members a first look at compelling content," said Robert Kyncl, vice president of content acquisition for Netflix. "The excitement and value that these high-profile shows bring to the growing library of choices available to watch instantly at Netflix is appreciated by our members, who are always looking for new and interesting shows to enjoy."
"UNITED STATES OF TARA" is a new series starring Ms. Collette as Tara, a suburban wife and mother struggling with DID (dissociative identity disorder) formerly known as multiple personality disorder. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Diablo Cody and Alexa Junge, and created by Academy Award(R) winning screenwriter Ms. Cody ("Juno"), the series delves into how a family copes with the various personalities that may appear on any given day, including "T," a provocative teenager, "Buck," a gun-toting Vietnam vet and "Alice," a Betty Crocker homemaker who thinks baking is the answer to all problems. John Corbett co-stars as Max her loving and supportive husband of 20 years who works hard to keep up with Tara's alters, while maintaining some sense of normalcy for their teenage children: sarcastic and rebellious daughter Kate (Brie Larson) and tenderhearted bookworm, Marshall (Keir Gilchrist). Although they are typical teens, they've learned to adapt to their mother's unpredictable personalities. The only sticking point to their living in a state of oblivion is Tara's insecure sister, Charmaine, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, who holds the crucial key to Tara's past.
