LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

THE C WORD (Showtime) - John Benjamin Hickey ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen") and Phyllis Somerville ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") have joined the cast of the comedy pilot, about Cathy (Laura Linney), "a suburban wife, mother and a teacher forced to face a diagnosis of cancer but who manages to find the lighter side of a dark situation." They'll play her brother and neighbor, respectively. Also on board is Gabourey Sidibe ("Precious") in a potentially recurring role as a student in Cathy's summer-school class, "a teen whom Linney's character tries to help lose both weight and the bad attitude." Bill Condon is directing the Sony Pictures Television-based half-hour from a script by Darlene Hunt. Hunt, Linney, Neal Moritz and Vivian Cannon of Original Film then serve as the executive producers.
THE GOODE FAMILY (ABC)/SIT DOWN, SHUT UP (FOX) - Comedy Central is reportedly in talks to snag the off-network rights to both short-lived animated series. It's understood said repeats will roll out sometime next year however full details, including financial specifics, weren't released.
UNTITLED IDRIS ELBA PROJECT (NBC, New!) - Idris Elba ("The Wire") is set to topline a potential new drama at the Peacock about "a vigilante lawyer who uses any means necessary to defend his clients against a corrupt district attorney and city establishment." David Eick ("Bionic Woman") is executive producing the hour, to be written by feature writers Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples. No other details were given.
