Development Update: Thursday, April 22
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

HOW TO MAKE IT IN AMERICA (HBO) - The pay channel has ordered a second season of the Bryan Greenberg/Victor Rasuk-led comedy, about two best friends trying to make a go at the fashion industry in New York City. Eight new episodes are set to roll out in the summer of 2011. The show's freshman run averaged 2.8 million viewers per week when its various rebroadcasts are factored in. Ian Edelman created the series, which he executive produces alongside Jada Miranda, Julian Farino, Mark Wahlberg, Rob Weiss and Stephen Levinson.

IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA (FX) - Former staffers Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh have inked a one-year overall deal with Universal Media Studios. The pact calls for the duo to develop new series projects for the studio. Lee and Walsh also penned this weekend's Syfy original "Mothman" as well as the comedy scripts "Broke Friends" and "Family Business" at FOX and ABC, respectively. The latter half-hours were set up at ABC Studios.

THE KILLING (AMC) - Mireille Enos ("Big Love") has booked the female lead on the drama pilot, which "ties together three distinct stories by a single murder and as the detectives assigned to the case disagree about the best course of action, they chase down a variety of leads and suspects." She'll play Sarah Linden ("lone wolf type, solo distance runner, pretty without trying, her smiles rare, her intense eyes strange, unblinking"), the homicide detective who's investigating the aforementioned murder. Billy Campbell, Brent Sexton, Eric Ladin, Jamie Anne Allman, Joel Kinnaman and Michelle Forbes also star in the Fox Television Studios-based hour, which Patty Jenkins is directing off a script by Veena Sud. Production is set to begin early next month in Vancouver.

TORCHWOOD (FOX) - The network has passed on importing the much-ballyhooed "Doctor Who" spin-off. "BBC Worldwide Productions and the FOX Broadcasting Company have mutually agreed not to progress together with a 13-episode serialized 'Torchwood' format," the former company said in a statement. "We are currently in discussion with several interested networks." No other details were given other than BBC Worldwide is still confident about finding a U.S. home.

WEB THERAPY (Showtime, New!) - Lisa Kudrow's web series has been sold to the pay channel as a full-fledged comedy series. All 45 webisodes from the Lexus-sponsored project, in which Kudrow plays "a therapist with limited patience for other people's problems," will be repackaged into half-hour episodes for the network due later this year. To bridge the various installments, new interstitial material will be filmed specifically for its Showtime run. Is or Isn't Entertainment's Kudow and Dan Bucatinsky and Intelligent Life Productions's Ron Qurashi and Diane Charles are the executive producers of "Therapy," which was directed by Don Roos.
