Development Update: Tuesday, May 4
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

BODY OF PROOF (ABC) - Sunil Nayar ("Three Rivers") has signed a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios. Said pact, which begins next month, calls for him to develop new series projects for the studio as well as serve as showrunner on its ABC pilot "Body of Proof" should it make it to series.

CAPRICA (Syfy)/FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (DirecTV) - Patrick Masset and John Zinman have inked a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. The pact calls for the duo, who currently serve as co-executive producers on both series, to develop new projects for the studio in addition to staff on one of 20th's 2010-11 season offerings.

NIKITA (The CW)/OUTSOURCED (NBC) - Staffing has reportedly begun on both pilots, a positive indicator each project is on track for a series commitment. The former is a revival of the film/TV franchise of the same name with Maggie Q as the title character. Craig Silverstein, McG and Peter Johnson are the executive producers for Warner Bros. Television. The latter then revolves around a customer service manager (Ben Rappaport) who's sent to India to train his replacement when his department is outsourced. David Skinner, Ken Kwapis, Robert Borden and Tom Gorai are behind said half-hour, which is based at Universal Media Studios.

TEAM SPITZ (CBS) - Kurtwood Smith ("Worst Week") has joined the cast of the comedy pilot, about a bombastic high school football coach (Rob Riggle) at an upscale private school. He'll play Charles Kersey, the "nervous and flop-sweaty" principal of the school. Smith, who's already attached to fellow CBS pilot "Hitched," replaces Bob Odenkirk in the project, which is in reshoots to accommodate the change. CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television are behind the half-hour, which also features Jonathan Slavin, Max Ehrich and Sarah Chalke. Ted Wass is directing from a script by Bill Martin and Mike Schiff.

UNTITLED SAMUEL L. JACKSON/NEIL LABUTE PROJECT (Showtime, New!) - Samuel L. Jackson and Neil LaBute are developing a new drama at the pay channel about a white supremacist family in the Pacific Northwest. Jackson conceived the idea for the hour, to be penned by LaBute, and will executive produce via his Uppi TV banner alongside Amanda Tracey. The company recently re-upped its two-year production deal with CBS Television Studios.
