LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:
Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!
CHAOS (CBS) - Kurtwood Smith ("That '70s Show") has joined the cast of the upcoming drama, about "a group of rogue CIA spies in the Office of Disruptive Services (ODS), who combat threats to national security amidst bureaucratic gridlock, rampant incompetence and political infighting." He'll play Director Higgins in the project, the head of the aforementioned ODS who "approaches his job the same way a politician approaches a microphone - calibrating his every word." He'll take over from Stephen Rea, who originated the role in the pilot. Carmen Ejogo, Eric Close, Freddy Rodriguez, James Murray and Tim Blake Nelson also star in the 20th Century Fox Television-based project, from writer Tom Spezialy and director Brett Ratner.
GO GIRLS (ABC) - Michael Oates Palmer ("Rubicon") has been brought in to shepherd the potential drama, a domestic take on the New Zealand hit about "three 25-year-old women and their male childhood friend who, dissatisfied with their lives, make challenging promises to one another that they set out to fulfill." He'll take over from Liz Tuccillo on the ABC Studios-based hour, which also comes from John Barnett and Julia Franz's South Pacific Pictures. It's presumed ABC proper is no longer attached.
THE HURT (FX, New!) - Michael Oates Palmer ("Rubicon") likewise has landed a "comic, edgy medical" drama at the cable channel "set in the worst public hospital in one of the worst cities in the country, Bridgeport, Connecticut." Warner Horizon Television is behind the project with Greer Shephard and Michael M. Robin executive producing via their studio-based Shephard/Robin Co.
LA INK (TLC) - The cable channel has ordered eight additional episodes of the veteran reality series, which follows Kat Von D and her High Voltage tattoo shop. Said installments will roll out in the spring as part of its fourth season, which wraps its fall run tomorrow night. Original Media is behind the series, which recently tapped Gerry McKean ("BBQ Pitmasters") as an executive producer to replace the departing Gil Lopez.
LIFE UNEXPECTED (The CW) - Creator Liz Tigelaar has confirmed the netlet won't order any additional episodes for the show's sophomore season. "hey peeps. it's true, it's real, no back nine," she wrote on her Facebook page. "but stranger things have happened when people are invested. so keep watching. we still have half a GREAT season to show you and who knows!!!" The CW had previously asked for two additional scripts beyond its 13-episode production commitment.
LOS ROLDAN (ABC, New!) - Salma Hayek and Jose Tamez ("Ugly Betty") are looking to bring the Argentinian telenovela format to the U.S. "Betty" alums Veronica Becker and Sarah Kucserka are penning said adaptation, about "a working-class man who saves the life of a woman [who] then hires him to run her company -- much to the chagrin of her family." The quartet then will executive produce via the former's Ventanarosa banner for ABC Studios.
SELLING LOS ANGELES (HGTV, New!) - JV Productions and Forget Me Not Productions have booked a spin-off of their successful newcomer "Selling New York." The real estate series will once again "showcase three boutique real estate agencies battling to sell high-end properties," this time in the City of Angels. Production on the project begins in January for an air date later in 2011. Parent series "New York," which received a three-season pickup last month, returns in January.
UNTITLED ETHAN REIFF/CYRUS VORIS PROJECT (ABC, New!) - Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris ("Eleventh Hour") have booked a potential drama at the Alphabet "about a team of old-school CIA covert operatives (kick-ass soldier-spies) who won the Cold War in the Eighties but were then forced out due to budget-cuts in the early 1990s. Now, they have been recruited to go back to work for their country by the chief of the Special Activities Division, a go-getter young woman who is also the team leader's estranged daughter." Rob Cohen ("xXx") is on board to helm the untitled hour, which is set up at ABC Studios. Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment will also executive produce alongside the trio.
UNTITLED MOLLY SHANNON PROJECT (HBO, New!) - Molly Shannon is set to star in a potential comedy for the pay channel about "a nun who makes the difficult decision to leave the convent and confront life in the outside world. Shannon's character became a nun after getting her heart broken at 18. Now she is an utterly innocent woman in her early 40s who has never had sex and has to discover the modern world in all of its tawdriness." Tim Long ("The Simpsons") is behind the half-hour, which he'll executive produce alongside Shannon and her manager Steven Levy.
WEB THERAPY (Showtime) - Oscar-winner Meryl Streep reportedly has filmed a three-episode arc on Lisa Kudrow's upcoming series for the pay channel. Previously announced guest stars include Jane Lynch, Rashida Jones, Courteney Cox, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael McDonald and Bob Balaban. Kudrow stars as "a self-professed psychotherapist who treats patients via webcam in hilarious sessions that are way too brief to ever make any material progress in her clients' lives." Dan Bucatinsky and Don Roos executive produce the half-hour alongside Kudrow.
