Development Update: Friday, July 29
By The Futon Critic Staff (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The latest development news, culled from recent wire reports:

Looking to keep track of all the various projects in development? Click here to visit our signature "Devwatch" section. There visitors can view our listings by network, genre, studio and even development stage (ordered to pilot, cast-contingent, script, etc.). It's updated every day!

CHUCK (NBC) - Carrie-Anne Moss is the latest addition to the show's upcoming final season. She'll recur as Gertrude Verbanski, "a former spy who now runs Verbanski Corp. - the chief rival of Chuck and Sarah's new company - [who's] ruthless and deadly, yet she also has a weak spot for Casey, her old rival." Other new faces for the swan song include Craig Kilborn and Mark Hamill.

HAPPY TOWN (ABC) - Co-creators Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec have inked a one-year overall deal with Fox 21. The pact calls for the duo, who are busy on the feature side with "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," to develop new series projects for the cable-targeted studio.

POWERS (FX) - Vinnie Jones ("The Cape") is sticking with the superhero genre as the actor has joined the cast of the drama pilot, about "a homicide department that deals with cases involving "powers" (people with superpowers)." He'll play Johnny Royale, "a criminal kingpin who possesses telekinesis, among other abilities." Jason Patric and Lucy Punch co-star.

YOU SAY TOMATO, I SAY SHUT UP: A LOVE STORY (Lifetime, New!) - Annabelle Gurwitch ("Dinner and a Movie") is developing a comedy at the cable channel based on her book with husband Jeff Kahn of the same name. Said effort was billed as a "memoir of marriage and child-rearing; the couple's son, Ezra, was born with a medical condition called VACTERL association." No other auspices were given.
