Pablo Larraín's Miniseries 'My Sad Dead,' Based on Stories by Mariana Enriquez, Will Have Its World Premiere at San Sebastián Film Festival

Starring Mercedes Morán, Dolores Fonzi, Alejandra Flechner, and Carolina Álvarez, it will compete in the Official Selection.

After its Festival premiere, the four-episode series will arrive on Netflix on September 24.

The San Sebastián International Film Festival announced that Netflix's My Sad Dead will be part of the Official Selection competition at its 74th edition. Directed by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín (Maria, El Conde) and based on stories by acclaimed Argentine author Mariana Enriquez, the story stars Mercedes Morán, Dolores Fonzi, Alejandra Flechner, and Carolina Álvarez. Produced by Fabula, the four-episode series will premiere on Netflix on September 24, following its screening at the Festival, where it will be presented in feature-length format.

"Pleased that My Sad Dead is part of the competition in San Sebastián, an old and close festival, where our language and culture are protagonists," said Larraín on returning to participate in the Festival.

The fiction is based on the short story of the same name, My Sad Dead, by the acclaimed writer, and weaves the narrative together with passages and characters from her other works: Julie, A Sunny Place for Shady People, and When We Talked to the Dead. The adaptation was written by Mariana Enriquez, Guillermo Calderón, Anastasia Ayazi, and Pablo Larraín.

Synopsis:

Ema, a recently retired doctor who can see the dead, tries to process her mother's death and her own unresolved matters. The arrival of her niece Julie and the murder of three teenagers in Piedrabuena, a suburban neighborhood marked by violence, trigger a strange phenomenon that breaks the fragile balance between the living and the dead. What had been Ema's burden until then begins to spread throughout the neighborhood: the dead start to make themselves present, and no one will be able to escape the sound of their own ghosts.
