New 30 for 30 documentary revisits a pivotal two weeks in Gainesville, as Steve Spurrier's arrival at Florida coincided with tragedy that shook the university community
A production of MY Entertainment and directed by Daniel B. Levin
ESPN Films' 14 Days in Gainesville, a new 30 for 30 documentary examining an unforgettable two-week period in the history of the University of Florida and its football program, will premiere Tuesday, September 15 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN App.
Directed by Daniel B. Levin, 14 Days in Gainesville returns to the fall of 1990, when Gainesville, Fla., found itself caught between tremendous anticipation and unimaginable tragedy. Steve Spurrier, the Heisman Trophy winner, had returned to his alma mater as head football coach, promising to breathe new life into a program searching for a new era of success. At the same time, the university community was shaken by the murders of five students over a matter of days.
Against that backdrop, the documentary chronicles a community grappling with fear and grief while the start of a new football season approached.14 Days in Gainesville explores how students, players, coaches and residents experienced those extraordinary days - and how a football program preparing for a new beginning became intertwined with a community confronting an unthinkable tragedy and a serial killer on the loose.
Spurrier arrived at Florida in 1990 already deeply connected to the university. As the Gators' quarterback, he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966 before embarking on a career in professional football and coaching. His return to Gainesville generated immediate excitement around a program eager to establish itself among college football's elite.
But just days before Florida was scheduled to open its season, Gainesville was transformed by a series of murders that left five students dead and sent fear throughout the university and surrounding community. Classes were disrupted, students left town and a community accustomed to the anticipation surrounding the start of football season instead faced profound uncertainty and loss.
14 Days in Gainesville revisits that period through the perspectives of those who experienced it, including Spurrier, examining how the university and Gainesville communities responded in the aftermath and how football existed alongside - but could not erase - the gravity of what had occurred.
"14 Days in Gainesville is more than just a college football film. It's the powerful story of a community confronting unimaginable tragedy and how, in the midst of fear and grief, a football team helped bring people together and helped a community begin to heal. We're incredibly proud to tell this story with ESPN Films and 30 for 30," said Joe Townley, executive producer of 14 Days in Gainesville.
Featuring firsthand accounts from Spurrier and members of the Gators football program, along with journalists, university leaders, law enforcement officials and members of the Gainesville community who experienced those two weeks, the film revisits the fear, grief and uncertainty that gripped Gainesville as Florida prepared to begin a new era on the football field.
14 Days in Gainesville is directed by Daniel B. Levin and premieres September 15 at 8 p.m. on ESPN and the ESPN App.
