BREAKING THE DEADLOCK "AI: WHO'S IN CONTROL?"

Broadcast and Streaming Premiere October 27 on PBS

The Emmy Award(R)-nominated GBH series BREAKING the DEADLOCK returns with a new episode, AI: WHO'S IN CONTROL?, premiering Tuesday, October 27 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS, and streaming on PBS.org, YouTube, and the PBS app.

In this new episode, eight panelists face a series of challenging dilemmas: in a town fractured over data centers, will a couple take a huge cash offer from a company primed to build one? Is it acceptable for a town to use AI surveillance cameras to identify people who might commit a crime, but haven't yet?

Grappling with thorny issues touching on public safety and personal privacy, the panelists' struggles become our own. As national and local governments struggle with potentially regulating AI, and as Americans of all political backgrounds question how AI will impact their lives, BREAKING the DEADLOCK provides a framework for people of widely different beliefs to find common ground for discussion.

Aaron Tang, Professor of Law at UC Davis, moderates a panel of experts with widely varied perspectives as they tangle with our new reality. We are all using a technology that can at times seem miraculous - in improving health outcomes, making life easier, and helping to educate. But how far is too far? How fast is too fast? And ultimately, who's in control? Confronting dilemma after dilemma, the panel works through challenging ethical questions to reach common understanding about the stakes of this controversial technology.

Panelists:

· Campbell Brown - Co-Founder and CEO, Forum AI

· Astead W. Herndon - Host and Editorial Director, Vox.com

· Hon. Gina Ortiz Jones - Mayor of San Antonio (D)

· Joe Manchin III - Former US Senator from West Virginia (D,I)

· Sara Nelson - International President, Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO

· Michael Novogratz - Founder and CEO, Galaxy Digital

· Max Tegmark - MIT Professor; Founder and Chair, Future of Life Institute

· Josh Tyrangiel - Staff Writer, The Atlantic

Moderator:

Aaron Tang - Professor of Law at UC Davis, Supreme Court commentator, author of Supreme Hubris: How Overconfidence Is Destroying the Court―and How We Can Fix It

A press screener for this episode will be available in the coming weeks. We can facilitate an interview with the moderator Aaron Tang and/or the series producers and can check with the panelists on their availability if of interest.

Walter Foundation and by a grant from Anne Ray Foundation and was made possible in part by PBS viewers.
