"Wipeout" Defeats its Nearest Non-Sports Competition in the 8pm Hour by 55% Among Adults 18-49 and Ranks as the No. 1 Entertainment Show of the Night

Against Stiff Competition, "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" Improves the Hour for ABC by 7% in Viewers and by 20% in Adults 18-49 Year to Year

The Season Premiere of ABC News' "Primetime: Family Secrets" is the Top Non-Sports Show at 10pm, Growing Sharply from its Year-Ago Opener

Tuesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

ABC finished a strong second on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (2.7/8) to Fox, with coverage of the record-setting, longest-ever "MLB All-Star Game," beating out third-place NBC by 23% (2.2/7) and fourth-place CBS by 69% (1.6/5). The Net ranked No. 1 on Tuesday with Women 18-49 (3.2/9) and Women 25-54 (3.5/9-tie).

ABC was up over the same night last year (7/17/07), when it didn't face the "All-Star Game," in both Total Viewers (7.1 million vs. 6.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.7/8 vs. 2.4/7).

"Wipeout" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

ABC's "Wipeout" beat out its nearest non-sports competition in the 8 o'clock hour (NBC) by 8% in Total Viewers (8.5 million vs. 7.9 million) and by 55% in Adults 18-49 (3.1/10 vs. 2.0/7).

"Wipeout" ranked as Tuesday's No. 1 non-sports show in Adults 18-49 (3.1/10), tied with NBC's "America's Got Talent" in the 9 o'clock hour. In addition, the new ABC unscripted series was the night's highest-rated program overall with Women 18-34 (3.0/10), ahead of the "MLB All-Star Game."

"I Survived a Japanese Game Show" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

ABC's "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" took second place in the 9 o'clock hour to Fox's "mid-summer classic" baseball game among Men 18-34 (1.9/7-tie).

Despite facing stiff competition from the "MLB All-Star Game" this year, "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" improved ABC's performance in the hour over the year-ago night (7/17/07 with an original of "Shaq's Big Challenge") by 7% in Total Viewers (5.8 million vs. 5.4 million) and by 20% in Adults 18-49 (2.4/7 vs. 2.0/6).

"Japanese Game Show" was up 8% week to week in Women 18-34 (2.7/8 vs. 2.5/7).

"Primetime: Family Secrets" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

The season premiere of ABC News' "Primetime: Family Secrets" registered as the top non-sports program in the 10 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (7.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.5/7).

"Primetime: Family Secrets" was up from its debut last summer by 1.2 million viewers and by 19% in Adults 18-49 (5.8 million and 2.1/6 on 6/26/07). The ABC newsmagazine hit series highs in Adults 18-49 (2.5/7 tie) and Adults 25-54 (2.9/7). In addition the show delivered ABC's highest non-sports Adult 25-54 rating the time slot this summer.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped from 17% at the same point in 2006-07, up to 25% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
