Thursday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)

Growing week to week, ABC earned a strong second place on Thursday to CBS in Total Viewers (10.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.7/10). The Network won the night in Adults 18-34 (3.4/10) for the 3rd week in a row, delivering the No. 1 position for the 5th time in 6 weeks. In addition, ABC took first place with Women 18-49 (5.3/13) for the 6th week in a row, and marked its 9th consecutive week this season as Thursday's No. 1 net with Women 18-34, outdelivering its closest competition by 44% on the latter measure (4.9/13 vs. 3.4/8 - NBC).

ABC's Thursday results were up week to week in both Total Viewers and in Adults 18-49 (11/13/08 = 10.4 million and 3.6/9).

"Ugly Betty" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

ABC's "Ugly Betty" took second place in the 8 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (8.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.5/7), outdrawing NBC's comedies in the time period for the 7th week straight week, by 2.2 million viewers ("My Name is Earl"/"Kath & Kim" = 6.1 million). "Betty" ranked No. 1 in the hour with Adults 18-34 (2.3/7) and dominated its slot in Women 18-34, beating CBS' "Survivor: Gabon" by 27% (3.3/10 vs. 2.6/8). In fact the ABC series marked its 9th straight telecast this season as the No. 1 TV show in the hour in Women 18-34.

Retaining all of its Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, "Ugly Betty" was up week to week in Adults 18-34 (2.3/7 vs. 2.2/7) and achieved a best-since-premiere number in Men 18-34 (1.4/4 best since 9/25/08).

"Grey's Anatomy" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

For the 4th week in a row and the 5th time in the last 6 weeks, ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" qualified as Thursday's No. 1 TV show in the key Adult 18-49 sales demo. The ABC medical drama defeated CBS' drama competition in the 9 o'clock hour, "C.S.I.," by a best-of-season margin of 24% in Adults 18-49 (6.1/15 vs. 4.9/12) and by 88% in Adults 18-34 (6.0/16 vs. 3.2/8). "Grey's" qualified as the night's No. 1 show with Adults 18-34 for the 5th time in 6 weeks.

"Grey's" marked best-since-season-premiere results in Total Viewers (15.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (6.1/15) since 9/25/08.

"Life on Mars" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Life on Mars" ranked No. 2 across the key Women demographics: W18-34 (2.4/7-tie), W18-49 (3.3/9-tie) and W25-54 (4.1/10-tie).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 21% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
