Nightline Is #1 Among Total Viewers -- Outperforms "Tonight Show" for 8th Consecutive Week

Ratings Report for ABC News' "Nightline" For the Week of August 10, 2009

"NIGHTLINE" IS #1 AMONG TOTAL VIEWERS -- OUTPERFORMS "TONIGHT SHOW" FOR 8th CONSECUTIVE WEEK

"NIGHTLINE" GROWS SIGNIFICANTLY YEAR TO YEAR, +33% IN TOTAL VIEWERS AND +16% AMONG A25-54

"NIGHTLINE" INCREASES +17% THIRD QUARTER TO DATE WHILE "TONIGHT SHOW" DECLINES -39%

ABC News' "Nightline" was #1 among Total Viewers for the week of August 10, 2009, outperforming NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," according to Nielsen Media Research. This marks the eighth week in a row "Nightline" has outperformed "Tonight" among Total Viewers. The last time "Nightline" beat "Tonight" eight consecutive weeks was in 1995. "Nightline" outperformed "Tonight" by 690,000 and "Letterman" by 410,000 Total Viewers. Among Adults 25-54 and 18-49, "Nightline" outperformed "Letterman" for second place. (*Note: "Letterman" aired repeats last week)

"Nightline" continues to experience growth season to date, quarter to date, week to week and year to year. For the 32nd consecutive week, "Nightline" grew among Total Viewers year to year. The program grew +33% versus the same week last year. Among Adults 25-54, "Nightline" grew +16% compared to the same week last year.

Quarter to date, "Nightline" is in first place among Total Viewers with 3.53 million, a growth of +17% vs. 2008 quarter to date, while "Tonight" has declined -39% in Total Viewers, -22% among A25-54 and -10% among A18-49.

Season to date, "Nightline" is solidly in second place with 3.77 million Total Viewers and 1.63 million Adults 25-54. The program is up +14% among Total Viewers, +3% among A 25-54 and +5% among A18-49.

Week to week, "Nightline" grew +3% among Total Viewers and +12% among Adults 25-54. In comparison, "Tonight" declined -9% among Total Viewers and -8% among A25-54 week to week. Additionally, "Nightline" shrank the A25-54 gap with "Tonight" by 77% and the A18-49 gap by 32% week to week.

ABC News' "Nightline" is anchored by Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir. John Donvan and Vicki Mabrey are correspondents. James Goldston is the executive producer. The program airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m., ET on the ABC Television Network.
