WEEK No. 24:
During the week of February 28, 2011, ABC delivered 6 of the week's Top 20 TV shows among Adults 18-49, placing 4 of the Top 10 and the No. 1 scripted series overall: "Modern Family" - No. 4 (No. 1 scripted series), "The Bachelor" - No. 9, "Secret Millionaire" and "Desperate Housewives" tied at No. 10, "20/20 Special Edition - 3/1" - No. 17 and "Castle" - No. 20. In addition to standing as the week's top scripted show in Adults 18-49, "Modern Family" was also TV's No. 1 scripted series in Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49). ABC's Sunday opener of "Secret Millionaire" stood as TV's biggest unscripted midseason premiere in 3 years with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 - since 3/2/08, excluding only Olympic-led and Super Bowl-led debuts. For the 3rd week in a row, ABC claimed the No. 1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49, as "20/20 Special Edition" earned the week's top spot with key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54). In fact ABC's "20/20 Special Edition" registered as TV's top-rated newsmagazine telecast (any net) to air without the benefit of a sports lead-in in more than 2 years with Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 - since 2/13/09.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 40% currently, from 36% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
