ABC Is #1 on Monday/"The Bachelor" Dominates "Ninja Warrior"/"Castle" Grows

ABC Monday Prime (8-11pm - 8.2 million and 2.1/6 in AD18-49): With The Bachelor and Castle, ABC finished as Monday's #1 TV network in Total Viewers, Adults 18-49 (tie), Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

The Bachelor (8-10pm - 7.9 million and 2.2/6 in AD18-49): From 8-10pm, ABC's The Bachelor dominated its unscripted competition in the 2-hour time period, beating NBC's American Ninja Warrior by 2.3 million viewers (7.9 million vs. 5.6 million) and by 16% in Adults 18-49 (2.2/6 vs. 1.9/5). The ABC unscripted series won its slot in Adults 18-34, stood was Monday's #1 TV show in key Women (W18-34/W18-49) and was the night's most social broadcast program with 173k tweets. The Bachelor grew 5% over its year-ago telecast in Total Viewers (7.9 million vs. 7.5 million on 1/14/13).

Castle (10-11pm - 9.0 million and 1.9/5 in AD18-49): During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's Castle beat out CBS' time-period premiere of Intelligence by wide margins in Total Viewers (+48% - 9.0 million vs. 6.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+73% - 1.9/5 vs. 1.1/3). The ABC drama ranked #1 in the hour with key Women (W18-34/W25-54). Castle was up week to week in Total Viewers (+2%) and Adults 18-49 (+12%).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 49% currently, from 47% at the same point in 2013. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
