DESCRIPTION: (from BBC America's web site) The Women's Guild in the small West Country town of Clatterford has more than its share of lovable eccentrics. It's also a place where everyone knows everyone else's business, however not everyone sees baking cakes and knitting as their scene. Take Sal Vine, the doctor's wife and local nurse, she lives at the centre of the community, but goes out of her way to avoid being recruited by the Guild's leader, Eileen. Things change, however, when Sal's husband dies suddenly of a heart attack. After the funeral and as the initial sympathy falls away, she begins to feel neglected and alone. And her busy life has suddenly become empty now that her son James has taken over the practice and his wife has assumed her role as the village nurse. In a bid to stop rattling around her empty house and avoid the local Grieving Group counselor, she decides it's time to take her own advice - stop sleeping in the dog basket, get a hair cut and a new top, take stock of her new life - and the Women's Guild is a good place to start. She soon discovers it's not all jam and Jerusalem. As well as reuniting old chums Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French, this warm and wonderfully engaging comedy stars Sue Johnston as Sal, and Joanna Lumley as the formidable and only slightly loopy Delilah Stagg. An amazing line-up of co-stars includes Pauline McLynn, Maggie Steed, David Mitchell, Sally Phillips, Patrick Barlow and Doreen Mantle. |
