Ai Haruna took Japan by storm with her lip-sync impersonation of pop singer Aya Matsuura in 2008. But that performance was the culmination of the long and winding road of a young boy named Kenji. Kenji had long struggled with his sense of self and felt conscious of the judgmental eyes of society, yet refused to give up his childhood dream of becoming an idol like Seiko Matsuda, one of the most popular Japanese singers of the 1980s. An encounter with a certain doctor forever changed Kenji's destiny. Previously unaware of the struggles faced by people with gender dysphoria, Dr. Koji Wada first encountered this harsh new reality when meeting Kenji, who Dr. Wada decided would be his first patient to undergo gender-affirming surgery. This pair formed an unbreakable bond of trust as they experienced overwhelming loneliness from the resulting societal backlash and criticism.
