HBO Max announces exclusive teaser for new documentary series 'Morte e Mistério na Amazônia'
New Brazilian true crime series, directed by Tatiana Issa and Guto Barra, premieres September 10 and investigates the story of Tatunca Nara, the central figure in one of the Amazon's most enigmatic and legendary mysteries.
HBO Max announces the exclusive teaser for the new Brazilian documentary series MORTE E MISTÉRIO NA AMAZÔNIA, premiering on HBO and streaming on September 10. On the channel, the three episodes will be aired weekly, while on streaming all episodes will be available on the premiere date. The plot portrays a legendary lost city, the stage for international expeditions, unsolved disappearances, and decades of investigations conducted by international authorities.
In the 1970s and 1980s, adventurers, explorers, and researchers from Europe and the United States traveled to the Amazon rainforest, motivated by reports of Akakor, a supposed lost civilization that had allegedly survived for thousands of years in the heart of the forest. The legend, fueled by books and theories on archaeology, ancient civilizations, secret societies, and even alleged connections to Nazism, led dozens of foreigners to the region in search of answers.
The central character of the story is Tatunca Nara, who claimed to be a descendant of the Ugha Mongulala and to know the way to Akakor. As an expedition guide, Tatunca began to be associated with the disappearance and death of several explorers, becoming one of the most controversial and mysterious figures in the history of the Amazon. Decades later, the case remains surrounded by questions and theories that span generations.
Across its three episodes, DEATH AND MYSTERY IN THE AMAZON, gathers testimonies from investigators, journalists, family members, experts, and witnesses who followed the events, as well as interviews with Tatunca Nara himself, who presents his version of the facts for the first time. The production, filmed in Brazil, the United States and the Caribbean, combines journalistic investigation, historical research, new evidence, and exclusive accounts to explore a case that remains one of the greatest mysteries of the Amazon rainforest.
Directed by Tatiana Issa and Guto Barra - the filmmakers behind the acclaimed documentary series BRUTAL PACT - THE MURDER OF DANIELLA PEREZ, and 13-time Emmy(R) nominees, with three wins - DEATH AND MYSTERY IN THE AMAZON reconstructs a story marked by twists and turns, challenging established narratives and separating fact from myth.
DEATH AND MYSTERY IN THE AMAZON is a co-production between HBO and Producing Partners. The series is directed and produced by Tatiana Issa and Guto Barra, with Sergio Nakasone, Adriana Cechetti, and Patrício Diaz serving as executive supervisors on behalf of Warner Bros. Discovery.
