Is Beauty Hope or a Curse? 'Plastic Beauty' Unveils Main Trailer and Key Art Ahead of September 17 Premiere
Netflix has released the main trailer and key art for the suspense series Plastic Beauty, which premieres globally on September 17.
Directed by Yuki Saito and written by Junya Ikegami, the series stars Mayu Matsuoka as gifted surgeon Fumi Numata and Riisa Naka as celebrity cosmetic surgeon Rin Tohyama, two doctors on opposing sides of Japan's cosmetic surgery boom.
The main trailer opens on a tense confrontation: a distressed patient threatens to end her life over a procedure that was supposed to save it. From there, Fumi finds herself face-to-face with Rin, whose image looms over the city on a billboard, promising total transformation. Their opposing philosophies collide head-on - Fumi refuses to operate on anyone she doesn't consider sick, questioning why someone would reject the face they were born with; Rin, in turn, believes everyone carries some kind of sickness worth treating. It's the fault line the whole series runs on, echoing the question at the heart of Plastic Beauty: is the pursuit of beauty a form of hope, or something closer to a curse?
Along the way, the trailer pulls back the curtain on the many people drawn into the clinic's orbit - a child content creator chasing online attention, a young patient who's simply "gotten bored" with her own face, a patient addicted to cosmetic surgery who makes detailed requests in pursuit of her ideal appearance, and a bedridden woman desperate for one last chance at beauty - each swept into the clinic's undercurrent of ambition and self-reinvention.
Released alongside the trailer, the new key art places Fumi and Rin in striking visual contrast, reflecting their opposing beliefs about the endless pursuit of beauty. The trailer also features the previously announced supporting cast, including Shotaro Mamiya, Minami Tanaka, Hiromi Nagasaku, Atsuro Watabe and others, each entangled in the clinic's simmering rivalries and hidden agendas. Behind the dazzling facade of the cosmetic surgery industry lies a vortex of money, ego and desire.
Plastic Beauty continues Netflix's run of unflinching looks inside Japan's society, following The Naked Director and Tokyo Swindlers - this time turning its focus to the country's booming cosmetic surgery industry. Set against a culture that increasingly embraces diverse definitions of beauty while still grappling with lookism, the series examines the price many are willing to pay to become someone new.
Plastic Beauty premieres September 17, only on Netflix.
