BONA FIDE HIT FROM ASHTON KUTCHER AND JASON GOLDBERG EARNS AN EIGHT-EPISODE ORDER FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON
HIT REALITY SERIES HAS DOMINATED YOUNG ADULT DEMOS
The WB's new hit reality show, BEAUTY AND THE GEEK, will return for its second installment during the 2005-2006 television season as the network has ordered eight episodes of the breakout success, it was announced today by the network's President, Entertainment, David Janollari.
The producing team of Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg got their show off to a rousing start at Madison Square Garden in May when they wowed advertisers with their personal appearance and video presentation at The WB's upfront presentation. Critical acclaim followed and Kutcher and Goldberg, the team that brought you Punk'd, had another hit on their hands. The second season order of eight episodes is an increase over the first season's six-episode run.
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK is a big win for The WB and our alternative programming team, and I couldn't be prouder to order a second cycle of what has become our signature reality franchise, said Mr. Janollari. Ashton and Jason have once again proven that they know exactly what the young adult audience is looking for in the reality arena. Their ideas for the second season will push the series to an even higher level.
Ashton and I are very excited about the pick-up and the overwhelming response from everyone about this show, said Mr. Goldberg. The fact that we were able to connect with the audience and produce a comedy with such heart shows that the viewers were ready for a change in this sector. All of us at Katalyst, 3 Ball, fox21 and The WB worked very hard to make sure we were delivering with that in mind. We've already received thousands of letters from people wanting to be on the next one and, although the format will remain the same, viewers can count on the show taking a huge leap creatively to keep it feeling and looking fresh.
From the minute we heard the pitch, we knew this show had the makings of a hit television series, said Jane Francis, Senior Vice President, fox21. It had exactly the sensibilities fox21 was looking for in approaching reality programming; different, unique, funny, but with heart. We couldn't be happier that it's such a success.
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK was an instant ratings winner, and has consistently won its time period in The WB's core 18-34 year-old demographic. In its most recent airing, BEAUTY AND THE GEEK established itself as a bona fide hit, winning its time period in key demos for the second consecutive week. The show was #1 in its 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET time slot among adults 18-34 persons 12-34, women 18-34 and women 12-34 (2.8/10). BEAUTY AND THE GEEK continues to gain momentum, growing virtually every half hour it has been on the air. This past week BEAUTY AND THE GEEK scored its best ratings yet in all 18-34, 12-34 and 18-49 demos, plus total viewers (4.5 million, 1.2 million more viewers than in the show's debut).
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK pairs seven gorgeous women with seven brilliant men. The members of the co-ed teams work to make their partner more well-rounded in an effort to win the $250,000 grand prize. For instance, in the inaugural run, the women had to bone up on their spelling and learn about rocket science while the men were tutored in fashion and dance moves.
BEAUTY AND THE GEEK is from fox21, produced by Katalyst Films and 3 Ball Productions with executive producers Ashton Kutcher & Jason Goldberg ("Guess Who," "Punk'd"), Nick Santora ("The Guardian," "The Sopranos"), J.D. Roth ("The Biggest Loser," "For Love or Money"), Todd A. Nelson ("The Biggest Loser," "For Love or Money") & John Foy ("The Biggest Loser," "For Love or Money").
